Dreamweaver MX 2004 and Dreamweaver MX 2004 Update 7.0.1 Release Notes

About Dreamweaver MX 2004

Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 is an easy, powerful, and open authoring tool that every member of the development team can use to quickly build robust websites and Internet applications. It provides rich, powerful CSS support and lets you work within one environment to easily create and manage any professional website, whether it's built using HTML, XHTML, XML, web services, ColdFusion, ASP.NET, ASP, JSP, or PHP.

About the 7.0.1 Update

Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 (7.0.1) fixes known problems in Dreamweaver MX 2004. Some of these issues could cause Dreamweaver to perform slowly or occasionally crash, so all current Dreamweaver MX 2004 users should download and install this software update.

Make sure the language version of the updater matches the language version of your copy of Dreamweaver. For example, you can't use the English updater with a non-English version of Dreamweaver.

System Requirements

Starting with the Dreamweaver MX 2004 release, Dreamweaver no longer supports Windows Me, Windows NT, or Macintosh OS 9 or OS 10.2.5 or earlier. Dreamweaver also no longer supports monitor resolutions below 1024 x 768 pixels. For more information, see the Dreamweaver system requirements on the Macromedia website.

Issues Resolved With the 7.0.1 Update

The 7.0.1 update fixes bugs in Dreamweaver MX 2004 on both the Macintosh and Windows platforms. The following are some of the more important issues resolved.

ASP.NET

The update fixes a number of rendering and visualization issues with ASP.NET documents, as well as problems with in-place ASP.NET editing and workflow.

CSS editing and rendering

Site management capabilities and stability were significantly improved. Genx usb flash drive drivers 8g 4. Changes include significant improvements to the Files Panel, view auto-refreshing, sorting, and scrolling.

Opening files with no specified character encoding

Users in eastern Europe report that when a character encoding is not specified in an existing page, Dreamweaver does not correctly display the eastern European characters. When you open a page in Dreamweaver, the application checks the encoding specified in the page's meta tag to tell it how to encode and decode the characters in the file. If the meta tag does not specify an encoding, however, Dreamweaver guesses latin-1 or some other encoding that might not be the desired encoding.

To address this problem, a new preference was added to check for an encoding every time you open a page in Dreamweaver. If the page does not specify an encoding, Dreamweaver sets the page's encoding to the specified default encoding. To turn on this preference, open the New Document preference dialog box (Edit > Preferences > New Document), and then select the checkbox below the Default Encoding pop-up menu.

Increased safety when moving files on the server

A preference was added that causes Dreamweaver to prompt you when you move a folder or file on the server. This preference is enabled by default and makes working with remote files safer. To turn off this preference, select Edit > Preferences > Site, and deselect the Move Options checkbox.

ColdFusion Reference help

The reference chapters of ColdFusion help (Help > Using ColdFusion) have been updated. The update fixes a problem with section introductions that contained only a heading and no links to the section topics. It also fixes a problem where the standard reference subheadings (Description, Category, Syntax, and so on) were not displayed.

Because of file size considerations, the new reference is not included in the 7.0.1 updater. However, you can install it separately as an extension in Windows or Macintosh. (Note: The extension updates the help system, not the Reference panel.) For more information, visit the Dreamweaver Exchange and search on 'Dreamweaver Help: Using ColdFusion.'

More issues

A detailed list of issues resolved with the update is available on the Macromedia website.

Known Issues

After installing the 7.0.1 update, please be aware of the following issues when using the product.

General

Image Viewer Flash element does not support GIFs

The Image Viewer Flash element (Insert > Media > Image Viewer) does not support GIFs because of patent issues. You can convert the GIFs to JPEGs in Fireworks or Photoshop.

Saving an HTML file as an ASP file

If you save an .htm file as an .asp page, Dreamweaver does not insert code that may be necessary to identify the ASP scripting language at the top of the page. If you have an ASP-Javascript site, an .asp file requires the following code at the top of the page to work: <%@LANGUAGE='JAVASCRIPT' CODEPAGE='1252'%>. Without it, the page may not function on the server, and Dreamweaver may not recognize or add server behaviors correctly. The solution is to manually add the missing code at the top of the file, close the file, then reopen it in Dreamweaver.

Renaming form objects after inserting them

When you insert multiple form objects of the same type in an HTML form, Dreamweaver does not give each object a distinct name. For example, every Text Field object you insert is named textbox. You must rename each object using the Property inspector, the Tag inspector, or Code view. If you like, you can set a Dreamweaver preference so that each form object of the same type is given a distinct name by default (textbox1, textbox2, etc.). To do this, select Edit > Preferences > Code Rewriting, and then select Rename Form Items When Pasting. This preference also applies when inserting new form objects.

Installing ColdFusion MX 6.1 on Windows 98 or 2000

If you install ColdFusion MX 6.1 on Windows 98 or 2000, you must also install the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.6 or greater. You can download the MDAC for free from the Microsoft website.

Macintosh issues

Dreamweaver will not launch after upgrading to Panther

Some users report that Macromedia applications will not launch after upgrading to Panther. Typically the application icon bounces on the dock and the application fails to launch. The issue generally affects users who upgrade Mac OS X using either the 'Archive and Install' or the 'Erase and Install' options.

This issue and the solution are described in Some applications won't run after upgrading to Macintosh OS X version 10.2.8 or to Panther (version 10.3) (ServiceNote 18933).

Mac OS 10.3 user authentication dialog fails

After installing Dreamweaver, the Macintosh user authentication dialog box keeps prompting you or crashes.

For normal installations, you will never see this problem. It will only occur when the AuthenticationService file in the Library/Application Support/Macrovision folder has been removed or is missing. This can happen in one of three ways:

  1. You manually deleted the Macrovision folder or the Application Support folder.
  2. You do a side-by-side install of Mac OS 10.3 with Mac OS 10.2, where Dreamweaver is installed under Mac OS 10.2.
  3. You install Mac OS 10.3 on a separate partition and Dreamweaver is installed under Mac OS 10.2.

You should be able to fix the problem by running the activation hotfix described in Some applications won't run after upgrading to Macintosh OS X version 10.2.8 or to Panther (version 10.3) (ServiceNote 18933). You can also fix the problem by re-installing Dreamweaver under Mac OS 10.3.

Using a non-roman keyboard on a Macintosh

Intermittent crashes have been reported on the Macintosh when using Dreamweaver with a non-roman keyboard. If you experience this problem, do the following:

  1. Open System Preferences in Mac OS X.
  2. Click the International button.
  3. In the International pane, click the Input Menu tab.
  4. In the Input Menu pane, click the Options button.
  5. In the dialog box that appears, uncheck 'Try to match keyboard with text' option. The option could also be called 'Font and keyboard synchronization' on some systems.

Documentation

Errata

While we try to make the documentation as accurate as possible, some errors are found after the text is sent for translation. Last minute changes and corrections will be published on the Documentation page on the Macromedia website.

Dead links in Apple Help Viewer

If you select Edit > Increase Font Size when viewing one of the Help systems in the Apple Help Viewer, then shut down and re-open the Help Viewer, the links in Help stop working. According to Apple, the problem is fixed in Mac OS 10.3 (Panther), but there's no fix or workaround for Mac OS 10.2 at this time. To fix the problem, change the font size back to normal.
